Learning Outcome Four

DUE TO COPYRIGHT ISSUES, MUSIC VIDEO COULD NOT BE UPLOADED ONTO YOUTUBE FOR THIS BLOG, BUT IT IS WITH MY TEACHER

What is it about?
The meaning of this song can be confusing and is really up to interpretation, but the basic outline is that the song expresses Rihanna’s love for something, and whatever it is, it makes her shine bright like a diamond.

What is the 'plot' of the story?
Within the song, Rihanna is singing about something I believe is a drug, she states that whenever she is around or under the influence of this drug, she feel alive and as if she is shining (like diamonds in the sky)

Describe the 'story' in your own words. The structure of the song - does it conform to mainstream songs' formulaic verse-chorus-second verse-repeat chorus and so forth?
I feel that this song structure defiantly conforms to typical mainstream structures; the song is tiringly repetitive with the word diamonds repeated almost 50 times, and the lyrics are very cheesy and some are senseless

The language used in the lyrics - what words are often repeated and what impact does this have?
The language in this song is very metaphoric, I believe that most of her metaphors reference to drugs and the word diamonds is repeated constantly, which makes me, believe that the word diamonds represents the state of being high on whatever drug she is singing about.

Consider the relationship between the musical style and the song's lyrics and narrative structure - does it all 'fit' together?
I think that the music style, narrative and structure of this song work very well as the lyrics of the song are very metaphoric and confusing, the narrative and structure of the song seems to go nowhere and is extremely repetitive, but this leave the audience thinking about what the song means and leaves the lyrics and narrative to the listeners interpretation

How does the song make you feel? How do the lyrics and the music contribute to this?
The song makes me feel confused, this is because the lyrics are still a little unclear to me, so it’s hard for me to relate the lyrics, the song is also a mid-temp, which makes me unsure whether the song makes me happy (upbeat) or sad (slow song)

What words are emphasized - how and why?
The word diamonds is emphasized in this song, mainly because diamonds is the word she uses to describe to level of happiness she feel under the influence of whatever drug she is taking

How does the vocal delivery 'fit' the songs subject matter and music accompaniment?

Rihanna is known for not being the strongest female vocalist, but her success lies within the production of her songs, her songs are very club-like and upbeat which usually distracts from her vocals, in this song, her producers have managed to blend her average vocals with a ground moving bass that makes you forget her singing and repetitive lyrics.
